Moving to, surviving, then living well in New York City is nearly universally seen as "having arrived". New Yorkers are brash, impulsive, good-natured and approachable. They like meeting people and are not shy about making new friends. Friendships can be struck up in public (i.e. on line for a bus, or at a bank) when two or more unrelated New Yorkers notice something unusual and make a (usually sarcastic) comment to one another.
