Boston College is a Jesuit university located in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, about 5 mi. west of Boston. It is neither a college nor located in Boston. Ranked as a Top 40 university according to USNews, Boston College has a positive reputation in the New England area, although many detractors are often keen to observe that Boston College, despite its academic aspirations, is far from being on the same academic level as its neighbor Harvard University. Boston College is one of the most selective universities in the nation, but according to most metrics not necessarily one of the best. Each year thousands of prospective students apply for admission at Boston College, but only less than 10% are admitted. While Boston College is sometimes perceived as a popular destination for Ivy League rejects, many accepted students choose Boston College because they really want to be there. Boston College students are often stereotyped as being white, rich, preppy, athletic, physically attractive, party animals, spoiled and snotty. Not all Boston College students fit that criteria, but stereotypes usually form over a period of time for a reason. Some people believe that many Boston College students suffer from an inferiority complex, as demonstrated by their desire to negatively compare Boston University to Boston College. Their inferiority complex, if they have one, might stem from the fact that they haven't got over their failure to gain acceptance to Ivy League schools.
