It was brought to Central Asia by Islam, in which Gambar(جامبار), whose name translates as "a man of great strength," is the faithful equerry of the fourth "righteous" Caliph Ali. Kazakhs (Zhylkysh-ata Kambar), Kyrgyz, Uighurs, Nogais and many other Turkic-speaking peoples are the patron saint of horses and herdsmen. The image is based on an ancient pre-Islamic deity. The Kazakh people have a widespread epic "Kambar Batyr", one of the oldest Kazakh heroic epics, which tells about the exploits of the hero Kambar, defeating the Kalmyk Khan.
