The term comes from a Chinese word of the same pronunciation, where "nei" means "internal", as within one group, and "juan" means "to struggle". Some examples: Paying ridiculous amount of money for houses because everyone else's doing so. Working 60 hours per week because others are working 55. Taking fewer days off from work per year because there are some people who take 0 paid days off. etc.

This mug was a Father’s Day gift for my dad, and let me tell you, it is the greatest mug ever produced by humankind. Not only does it have a simple, minimalist design on it with my father’s name, but also the witty definition on the back that perfectly describes him. While he only uses the mug to hold his pens, I’m sure it would act perfectly fine with any sort of beverage in it as well. Great as a little joke gift! But a little on the pricey side for a coffee mug. If I didn’t love the person as much as I do, I would probably never spend that amount on a normal coffee cup.
