ken-zahn-eh-lee A Haitian-Latin coming-of-age ceremony celebrating the 15th birthday of a youth, symbolizing their transition into cultural responsibility, community pride, and personal maturity. Rooted in Haitian resilience and enriched with Latin vibrance, Kenzañeli honors both boys and girls as they step into adulthood. It is marked by symbolic rituals, cultural affirmations, and communal celebration, representing the blending of ancestral strength with modern identity. From Haitian Creole: kenz (“fifteen”) + ane (“year”) + li (“it/he/she”) — “its 15th year.” Kenzañeli also reclaims Haiti’s rightful place in Latin history—as the first free Black republic, Haiti sparked revolutions across Latin America by proving enslaved people could defeat colonial empires.
