A slight modification of the already original ecto 1 modified 1959 Cadillac hearse made for the ghostbusters 2 movie in 1989 . In an attempt to refresh the new ghostbusters 2 films look , decision to modify the ecto 1 was made by adding new accesories on top of the hearse and two electronic bilboards on each side to advertise ghostbusting ads . The overall new ectomobile was nice enough to not alter the already popular look of the iconic car . Note that the car also comes equipped with a proton particle thrower and giant ghost trap ( featured in the atari 2600 , nes , sega games systems . ) never used in any of the two previous ghostbusters films , but was featured in the real ghostbusters animated series pilot .
