Au contraire des Phaser,cet armement provoque une disruption des champs ou de la matière contre qui il est utilisé,cela signifie grossièrement qu'il "détruit". Comme son nom l'indique. Ils sont incapables de paralysé une cible de la même façon que sont homologue le Phaser de la Fédération. Et on été privé de ce pouvoir avant que les Klingon découvre un moyen de copié la Fédération. De plus,les Disrupteur de vaisseaux spatiaux sont trop puissant pour paralysé une forme de vie sans la tuer, contrairement aux Phaser.
