This process is known as Work Tripping Reasons for this can include: Person already has a good job in work state, but moved to another and cannot transfer. Living state has low cost of living, but few(or no) jobs that pay well enough. Person is overqualified for local jobs. There are other personal reasons that vary amongst individuals.
