A derogatory slur for people from Southern England who speak what they themselves refer to as ‘Received Pronunciation’, a dialect of English that attempts to position itself as the ‘correct’, ‘proper’ or ‘default’ way of speaking Anglo- or British English. The dialect may incorrectly and fallaciously called the ‘Southern’, ‘English’ or ‘British’ accent by outsiders. It is not to be confused with other terms for southerners, as this term excludes East Angles, Westcountryfolk, Essexfolk, Estuaryfolk, Cockneys, Mockneys, and other non-RP Londoners and Southerners.
