Punkbuster
An ancient piece of software the for some unknown reason large publishers like EA still use. The staff at Punkbuster write their code in Java and only work on it from 9-11 am at the local community college computer lab. The program mainly functions as a lottery system, if punkbuster works you are allowed to play the game that day. This helps publishers pay as little as possible for servers as they force large portions of the community offline in a load balancing technique.
