Post-click dissonance
Post-click dissonance (PCD) refers to the emotional discomfort or cognitive dissonance that an individual experiences after taking an action that conflicts with their beliefs or values. In the context of online security, PCD can occur when a user clicks on a phishing attack or other malicious link, and then realizes that they have made a mistake. Phishing attacks are a type of social engineering attack in which an attacker sends an email or message that appears to be from a legitimate source, such as a bank or social media platform, in order to trick the recipient into revealing sensitive information or downloading malware. When a user falls for a phishing attack, they may experience PCD as they recognize that they have violated their own security protocols and put themselves and their data at risk. PCD can be an important factor in the success of phishing attacks. Attackers often use tactics such as urgency or fear to pressure users into clicking on a malicious link before they have time to think critically about the request. However, once the user realizes that they have been duped, they may be less likely to fall for similar attacks in the future. Additionally, if users are educated about the risks of phishing attacks and the importance of verifying the authenticity of messages before taking action, they may be able to avoid PCD altogether.
