Famous for its opulent "20th Century Limited" passenger trains, the New York Central catered to the elite with first-class accommodations and speedy, reliable service. It was also notable for its sleek, streamlined trains that became a hallmark of American rail travel during the mid-20th century. At its peak, the New York Central owned thousands of miles of track and operated a vast network of trains, but like many railroads, it struggled to compete with the rise of automobiles and air travel in the post-World War II era. In 1968, the New York Central merged with its rival the Pennsylvania Railroad to form the Penn Central Transportation Company, which later became notorious for its bankruptcy in the early 1970s.
