Neurodivergency

Neurodivergency refers to the variation in brain development and functioning that is different from what is considered typical or standard. It’s a non-medical term that encompasses a range of conditions, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other neurological or developmental differences. Neurodivergent individuals may have unique strengths and challenges compared to neurotypical individuals, whose brain development and functioning align with societal norms. The concept of neurodiversity recognises that these differences are natural and that they can lead to meaningful and positive contributions. It’s a shift from viewing such differences as deficits to understanding them as variations that do not necessarily need correction. Neurodivergent is often used in contrast to neurotypical, which describes individuals without these variations.
