This is the art form of taking something nice, and in a core ass way making it look cool by making it look "low budget" or "less desirable". The goal is to make a functional piece or machine look like madmax got ahold of it. Typically your paintbrush is a 3" angle grinder, and when you're finished - no one is gonna wanna steal the contraption you've built.
