1. Primary investigator of a crime scene. 2. One who acts in the absence of the detective sergeant. 3. Liaison from an investigative unit to any other unit of a law enforcement agency. 4. A Lead Detective is not "any detective" and therfore not responsible for answering phone calls addressed as such. 5. A title that may or may not provide supervisor authority, however this aspect of the title is often clouded in ambiguity and seldom easily explained.
