A very good umpire, unlike most umpires nowadays. He made ONE ACCIDENTAL CALL at first base, which could have given Armando Galarraga a perfect game. As a result, brainless Detroit Tigers fans start making up slanderous lies about Joyce, and some of them want him lynched. Cuckoo... He even apologized for making a MISTAKE. WE'RE HUMANS, WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES FROM TIME TO TIME. Even Armando knew that he made a mistake. It doesn't matter though: Armando still got the perfect game, even if it doesn't say so in the books.
