Humphried
The act of powerful interests withholding news or developments that would help out a certain candidate before an election, even if it is objectively good and would serve the public interest. Named after Hubert H. Humphrey who was the victim of this tactic right before the 1968 election when peace talks between the US and Vietnam had made progress and Humphrey began to surge in the polls. These talks were broken up by the Nixon campaign, fearing that a successful negotiation between the US and the Vietnamese would cost him the election. Nixon would win the election and the Vietnam war would rage for a few more years, seeing thousands of more Americans fall in combat and return home with severe disabilities caused by the combat, all because of one man’s ambitions.
