Homosexuality refers to sexual and romantic attraction between two individuals of the same sex. Since the word was coined in 1869 by Karl-Maria Kertbeny, it has influenced the development of the modern concept of sexual orientation, gaining associations with romantic love and identity in addition to its original, exclusively sexual meaning. Homosexuality is usually contrasted with heterosexuality and bisexuality. The term gay is used predominantly to refer to homosexual males. Lesbian is a gender-specific term that is only used for homosexual females.
