Australian English name for a game played on a rectangular field with net goals at either end in which two teams of 11 players each try to drive a ball into the other's goal by kicking, heading, or using any part of the body except the arms and hands. The goalie is the only player who may touch or move the ball with the arms or hands. The ball used is spherical and inflated with air, stitched from 32 panels of waterproofed leather or plastic (12 regular pentagons and 20 regular hexagons). The 32-panel configuration is the spherical polyhedron corresponding to the truncated icosahedron. Etymology: First used by Stephen Morris of Perth, Western Australia on June 13, 2010 to abolish the confusion of the use of words such as "soccer", "football" and "footy" in describing the sport of foccer with other related ball sports.
