A system whose rules are deliberately hidden—known only to initiates, revealed only to those who prove worthy. Gnostic spiritual traditions are esoteric systems. Corporate strategy at the highest levels can be an esoteric system—the real rules known only to a few, the rest following instructions they don't understand. Esoteric systems create power through knowledge asymmetry—those who know the rules control those who don't. They're also where deep wisdom is preserved, protected from dilution by the unready. Whether an esoteric system is oppressive or protective depends on whether you're inside or outside, worthy or unworthy, initiated or excluded.
