Basically, NO ONE knows what emo is anymore. Some say it's people who want to kill themselves/hate life/etc., but those are just people who, plainly, are depressed and upset with life. Doesn't mean they're emo. And there's also the emo dressing style. Seriously, what the hell? Just because you wear skinny jeans and black-rimmed glasses doesn't make you emo, either. As for me, I say that emo is a certain type of music, with meaningful lyrics about past mistakes and failed relationships with others, and emotions (any kind of emotion) Happy, sad, angry, jealous, etc. But hey, who's right about the "word" emo now-a-days?

The emo subculture originated in the late 1980's-1990's. It started off meaning "Emotive" or "Emoticore" refering to a type of hardcore punk. The original emo bands were ones such as Rites of Spring (who claim their fans started the term emo), and Embrace. During the late 1990's faded from it's place in the mainstream, but did exist. One of this time's signifigant emo conerstones was Weezers album "Pinkerton". From 2000 on emo came back (harder than ever!). When emo came back, it's true meaning was somewhat lost and certain fasets of the true emo culture changed. "Emo" now is said to stand for "emotional" and many bands that emo people listen to are a very washed down, pop, sad version of punk. Such modern emo bands are Dashboard Confesional, and Further Seems Forever. With it's change of meaning modern emo's act very emotional. Often they show signs of depression, wearing black and having a very pessimistic view of the world.

Person 1: God I hate these fake emo people! Person 2: They aren't fake emo, they are modern emo. Person 1: They still annoy the crap out of me! Person 2: Me too.

It's typically pointed at kids, mainly ranging in age from 13-22 because of hormone imbalances, who act "emo"tional and wear dark colors because they were individualized. So, now they think they are supposed to act that way. Good job judgmental assholes. It's your fault "emo's" cut and wear dark color. You don't like it? A subclass of music that is overly emotional (and not really emotional i.e. "posers"). The members of the band dye their hair black, wear extremely tight girl-jeans, comb the hair over one eye, wear wool scarves, and wear shirts with very stupid designs. Known for their emotionalness, extraordinary ability to think their life sucks no matter what, hairstyle, and wearing all black. EMOS ARE NOT ROCKERS/METALHEADS/GOTHS IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. They are often confused simply for wearing band shirts and all black. goths hate everyone, emos hate themselves. rockers listen to rock, emos listen to emo crap metalheads beat the shit outta people and have long hair, emos hurt themselves and have gay haircuts SO DON'T CALL THE LOCAL ROCKER GROUP AT YOUr SCHOOL EMOS
