Grindcore, also known as Speed Metal, is a music genre that pre-dates Death Metal by several years and is a bridge between Thrash and Death Metal. Without Grindcore, there would be no Death Metal. It is derived from Hardcore, Jazz, [Anarcho-Punk], Crust Punk, Proggresive metal and music, [experimental] noise/music, and Thrash. Grindcore can trace its roots back to 8 bands. Terrorizor, Repulsion, Napalm Death, Seige, [Extreme Noise] Terror, and Carcass are the first 6 bands of this metal sub-genre. Morbid Angel and Death have contributing members to Terrorizor and Repulsion. Grindcore is [experimental] and progressive by nature. It is very organic and extreme. It's defining characteristic, the "blast beat", termed by Napalm Death in the 1980s, is an extremely fast time signature found in all grindcore. If there is no "blast beat" in a band's music, they are not grindcore. Off time signatures and tempos can be found in grindcore but it is not a defining characteristic as it is in Mathcore or Prog Metal. There are several sub-genres of grindcore however with grindcore already being a sub-genre, I think it makes no sense to break it up further. Those micro sub-genres are Noisecore ([Extreme Noise] Terror), Industrial Grindcore (Godflesh), Goregrind (Carcass), eGrind (Pre-School Tea Party Massacre), Political Grindcore (Napalm Death), Pornogrind (Gorgasm) and Deathgrind, which is a crossover between grindcore and any of the other metal sub-genres.
