As such, centurions had a much higher mortality rate than officers in other armies - but only a few empires have come close to matching the size of Rome. Although Rome in the west dissolved, the centurions continued through the Byzantine Empire in the east, in this case renamed 'kentarch'. Same thing pretty much.
