Abbot Beoc came to Ireland in the 5th or 6th century. He was the youngest son of a Welsh chieftain and founded a monastery on an island in Lough Derg. Beoc’s church was referred to as Teo-da-Beoc and this probably gave rise to the spelling Dabeoc that is sometimes shown as Dabeog or Daveog. Recently John Cunningham pointed out that Dr. Michael Harbison has put forth the opinion that St. Daveog might have been a pre-Christian deity even though he is listed as one of the great saints of Ireland. The land on which the monastery was located was originally called Termon Dabeog but later became known as Termon Magrath after the local family in Pettigo.
