Gilgit-Baltistan is the fifth (self-governing) territory of Pakistan and it covers about an area of 72971 sq. km and its estimated population is 11, 00, 000. Gilgit is the capital of Gilgit-Baltistan. The KKH is the main snaking highway which links China to Islamabad (the Capital of Pakistan).

The Gilgit-Baltistan region includes about 126 world's highest peaks, numbered glaciers and countless lakes. The most famous peaks are K-2, Rakaposhi Range, Bilchaar, Diran, Dubani, Gashabrum Range and Nangaparbat. Insofar as a snow-capped peak is an appendage of a giant glacier. The famous Glaciers of Gilgit-Baltistan are Baltoro, Biafo and Batura glacial regions.
