Derived from the Italian word for Gallons. It was later used in the US, during the early 1900's, as a slang for "gallons of puke." When Italian [immigrants] would only have wine to keep them warm during the winter months, they would consume large amounts (gallons) of wine to deter the cold. Which [unfortunately] caused large amounts of vomiting. Now the term is used for when someone vomits uncontrollably and usually involving [projectile vomiting] as well.
