What Japanophilia does not indicate however is the merit of one's character; a truth that conflicts with the popular perception of Japanophiles as [necessarily] being a vocal minority of socially, [intellectually], and hygienically inept youngsters. The term is often applied dubiously to these troubled youths by people who do not appear to distinguish between Japanophilia and infatuation with Japanese animation and/or other related niche hobbies and interests.
