An evolution of anarcho-punk which blends punk with elements of metal. Crust usually consists of heavy, distorted guitar with guttural vocals and can vary from extremely fast to bone-crushingly slow, or somewhere in between. Its lyrics are usually political yet have a markedly more bleak outlook than those of anarcho-punk. Crust can be cited as the forebearer of many modern punk and metal subgenres, including grind, thrash, and modern hardcore. Possibly the most influential crust bands are Discharge, whose tempos and style spawned the subgenre D-Beat, and Amebix, whose gritty vocals are echoed today by bands of the aforementioned genres, many of which have probably never heard of them.
