It was invented by Rip Sewell of the [Pittsburgh Pirates] in the 1930s. And it was named by outfielder Maurice Van Robays. When asked what it meant, van Robays replied “Eephus ain’t nothin’.” But when Sewell asked why he named it that he said "Eephus means nothin' and so does the pitch"
