[Originally] it spawned when the *xmastree* smiley was used by a single user who is a member of the EMS Goths as an accessory to liven up their topic titles. Since it was used often, other EMS Goths begin to use it in their topic titles as a way for other EMS Goths to easily find the board where their EMS Goth [counterparts] would be chatting. And thus it became an iconic symbol of the Goths of EMS. It is still used on the EMS board by the Goths who chat there. Chances are that if you see a board [with that] smiley on that forum, there'll be Goths there.
