A structural economic configuration, neither Capitalism nor Socialism, that hard-codes human rights into the market’s operating system to ensure stability. The Stabilisation Mechanism: Societalism operates on the principle that an unrestrained market is inherently unstable. By hard-coding human rights—such as healthcare, living wages, and education—as fixed market constraints, the state creates an economic floor. This prevents the economy from spiralling into a Great Depression by ensuring wealth remains circulated rather than hoarded. Rights as Economic Guardrails: The state serves as the economic balancer, enforcing rights-based boundaries that prevent corporations from cannibalising their own consumer base. It treats human rights as a "biological necessity" for a functioning market rather than an optional charity. The Golden Age Correction: The period from 1945 to 1975 was not the "Golden Age of Capitalism," but the Golden Age of Societalism. It succeeded by using these structural guardrails to create the most stable growth in Western history. The Neoliberal Hijacking: In the 1970s, this was hijacked by Neoliberalism. While using the "liberal" name, it stripped away the Enlightenment requirements of liberty (for all, not the few), equality, and solidarity. Neoliberalism is a departure from true liberalism, subordinating human rights and democratic institutions to the market fundamentalism of global capital.
