Ppop is a genre of Filipino pop music (also known as P-pop, Pinoy pop, Pilipino pop and Philippine pop) that is a subset of OPM (Original Pilipino Music) which is made of predominantly ballads and novelty numbers. With its beginnings in the late 1970s, Pinoy pop is a growing genre in the 2020s. Through the 1990s to the 2000s, Pinoy pop was regularly showcased in the live band scene. From 2010 to the 2020s, Philippine pop music or Pinoy pop went through a huge metamorphosis in its increased quality, budget, investment and variety, matching the country's rapid economic growth, and an accompanying social and cultural resurgence of its Asian identity. P-Pop emerged with a heavy influence from K-pop and J-pop, a growth in Asian style ballads, idol groups, and EDM, and less reliance on Western genres, mirroring the Korean wave and similar Japanese wave popularity among Generation Z Filipinos and mainstream culture. Early 2010s Ppop groups include 1:43, Down to Mars, XLR8 (now known as X8), 3LOGY, Pop Girls and Sugar ’n Spice (produced by Viva Records, not be confused with the Tpop group of the same name). Late 2010s Ppop Groups: MNL48, Ppop Generation, U Go Girls (aka UGG) and CH4RMD (which was later rebranded as Charmed). 2020s Ppop Groups: SB19, bini, Alamat, G22, VXON, Dione, 1st.One, CLOVER, KAIA, R Rules, YARA, YGIG, PLUUS, PHP (Press Hit Play), Yes My Love, Pix!e (produced by Viva Records) and XOXO (produced by GMA Music).
