Traditionally, all semi-trucks have been manual, which means [the driver] would keep one hand on the wheel and one hand on the shifter. Opposite of manual, [automatics] allow the driver to keep both hands on the wheel [all the time], hence the term: Steering Wheel Holder. In most cases, the term is used as an insult toward drivers of automatic trucks who may be making a mistake or rash decision and are seen as lesser than their manual driving brethren.
