Bipping’/Bipping is a term for a car break-in that involves breaking a window & stealing personal items. The term originated in Oakland, California based on an acronym for “burglary in progress” where thieves break off spark plug pieces to shatter car windows. Today, the more common tool is a rescue device, which was invented to save trapped drivers.

In the Bay Area, "getting bipped" is an unofficial term for being a victim of an auto break-in. San Francisco has earned the nickname "Bip City" due to the high number of car break-ins and personal items lost to theft. Residents have resorted to removing EVERYTHING from their vehicles and just leaving the [windows rolled down] as a signal to burglars that [there is nothing] of value inside. The most common areas this happens in The City are North Beach, Japan Town, and Presidio. Tourists are most likely to get bipped at Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39, Coit Tower, and [Golden Gate] Park

More [sophisticated] thieves even use Bluetooth scanning to check for the presence of electronic devices stored in the vehicle. The M.O. is to hit a high volume of automobiles in [quick] succession, making as little noise as possible. A typical bip lasts under one minute as the goal is to quickly steal items from the glovebox, console, and front & back seats. Usually an accomplice drops off the perp then waits at the end of block to collect the stolen goods before moving along to another area. Over 13,000 B.I.P.s have been reported annually since 2017.
