The term ‘Madosophy’ was first coined by Ahmad Hourani to describe a way of thinking that is both rational and irrational. According to Hourani, this way of thinking is useful in navigating [the complex] and often [contradictory] realities of [the Middle East]. The term "madosophy" has since been used by other writers and thinkers to describe a variety of different things. Some people use it to refer to a kind of wisdom that comes from madness or suffering. Others use it to describe a way of thinking that is outside the mainstream, or that challenges conventional wisdom. Ultimately, the meaning of the term "madosophy" is up to the individual to decide. However, Udi Aloni defines madosophy in his book “What Does a Jew Want? On Binationalism and Other Specters", i.e., mad Sufi man, as the one who has the knowledge of madness. Madosophy entails finding ways to find meaning and purpose in our lives, even in the face of atrocities. It is a testament to the fact that [intelligence] and creativity can be found in unexpected places. The movie (Professor and the Madman) is a powerful reminder that we should never underestimate the [potential of] others. We should also be open to new ideas and perspectives, even if they come from unexpected places or persons. Madosphy is most needed nowadays, where we are constantly bombarded with images and messages that tell us what we should be and what we should want. Madosophy will enlighten us on how to break free from submission to mediocracy.
