In the 90s, [hardcore bands] started to infuse metal into their sound - some examples being Earth Crisis, Integrity and Vision of Disorder. This sound was known at the time as “metallic hardcore”. The most commercially successful of this era being Hatebreed. Eventually, this genre became known as “metalcore”. In the late 90s/early 00s, members of the [hardcore scene] also became fans of melodic death metal bands, such as In Flames and (especially) At the Gates. The original metalcore sound was combined with melodic death metal riffs and clean vocals (usually in the chorus), and the most popular style of metalcore was born. This is actually called melodic metalcore, and besides the first few bands who originated and popularised this sound, has little to [nothing to do] with the original metalcore bands, who came from the hardcore scene and still had a lot of hardcore [influence] in their music. There are still bands in metalcore who play a sound similar to the 90s bands. A few examples being Knocked Loose, Kublai Khan TX, Boundaries and Incendiary. These bands have roots in the hardcore scene and you can hear the hardcore influence still in their music.
