Windows Media [Player] is as old as the '90s but no [one] uses it anymore. It is best compared to Lemons: everyone knows about 'em, yet no one likes them unironically. Windows Media [Player] has been nuked from updates making it slow, hog up RAM, and it cannot play modern formats. However Microsoft thought it would be better to not only keep WMP but also introduce 2 separate apps rather than just updating Windows Media [Player] to no suck complete ass. If someone is using WMP then they are either on a nostalgia trip or are suffering from severe brain damage. Why not just use VLC or MPC-HC?
