To beat someone to pulp. This usage is derived from a process which was used at boat jetties before the advent of rubber tyres. Nowadays, rubber tyres are hung at jetty points to buffer the boat when hitting against the (quite often) concrete pillars or platform of the boat jetty. Earlier, it used to be cylinderical logs on which they used to put cotton around it, beat it onto the log until the cotton almost fused with the log and stuck to it to give a soft landing for boats being moored.
