Word originated from northeastern preparatory school uniforms.    In modern use, refers to teenagers intrested in upper class clothing and materialistic goods.  "Prep" attire includes shirts, polos, ripped jeans, and such.  Cheap "knockoff" prep brands include Aeropostale and [American Eagle] (polos, $20-$30).  Medium prep brands include Hollister and [Abercrombie and Fitch] (polos, $30-$50).  True prep brands include Ralph Lauren and Lacoste (polos, $65-$80).  High-end department stores, such as Nordstrom's and Bloomingdale's often carry real "preppy" clothing.  "Prep" refers to the way one presents themselves.  Many such preps will often "pop" their collar.  Many believe this looks stupid, but the polo shirt was invented by Renee Lacoste, and the collar was designed to be popped to protect the neck from the sunlight while [playing tennis].  A common misconception is the stereotype that all "Preps" are dumb and ditzy.  Although many are snotty and dumb, many are nice and intelligent.   Female preps can often be associated with the word Jap (Jewish American Princess).
