Josiah Spode: 1754-1827. British potter. In 1800 he founded a pottery that became famous for its bone china. A trademark used for a brand of fine china and earthenware. Also a character in a 'Jeeves and Wooster' (P. G. Wodehouse) episode who was a huge bully of a man [riding roughshod] over Bertie Wooster's life. Spode however, had a secret; Jeeves found out from his [connections] at the local manservant's club that Spode designed and sold brassieres. One whisper of the 'brand' and Bertie was [out of the woods], so to speak.
