From the French 'sanitary cordon', the meaning of CORDON SANITAIRE varies by vernacular context as follows: 1) In medicine, CORDON SANITAIRE is the restriction of movement of people into or out of a defined geographical area, such as a neighborhood, town, region, or country, originally denoting a barrier used to stop the spread of infectious diseases. 2) In politics, CORDON SANITAIRE is the refusal to cooperate with certain political parties. Often this is because the targeted party has an ideology perceived as unacceptable or extremist.
