When Volkswagen launched its Type 2 model in the early '50s, there were two variants available. The first was a commercial van called the Transporter. The second was a multi purpose van, which was going to be nammed the Bulli, but was instead called the Kombi. The popularity of the Kombi with its side windows and removable passenger seats gave birth to a number of nicknames for the vehicle. One of the most common nicknames is Bulli, which stuck around despite it not being used as the official VW name for the vehicle. More recently, the Bulli name has been resurrected for prototype VW vans and even one electric version of a '60s VW Samba. The word bulli has nothing to do with a browbeating person, which is spelled with a Y (bully).
