Originally created by the black community in the mid-1900s, it was a combination of Jazz, Blues, R&B, etc and was called rock & roll, named after the motion of sex. Evolved greatly through the 60s and 70s (a large part of which was due to The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and The [Rolling Stones]). In the 70s, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath introduced heavy metal. Today, rock has branched off into several categories including: [Alternative Rock], Adult Alternative, Punk/ Skater Punk/ Garage, Emo, Metal, Hard Rock, Soft Rock, Classic Rock, Arena Rock, Motown, Doowop, Folk Rock, Industrial, Thrash Metal, Nu Metal, [Psychedelic Rock], [Progressive rock] (broken up into German and [Italian] proggressive), Disco (hard as it is to accept), New Wave, Grunge, and Indie Rock. Evolved greatly during the first and second British invasions (The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The [Rolling Stones], The Animals, The Kinks, The Cure, Duran Duran, Eurythmyics, The Who, Boy George, The Birds, Chad and Jeremy, Deep Purple, The Troggs and The Sex Pistols). Took off at Woodstock, in Bethel, New York on August 15th, 16th and 17th, 1969. the most famous rock concert of all times. Made another turning point in the 80s with such bands as Mötley Crüe (technically formed 1979), Guns & Roses, Metallica, and Poison. (On a side note, John Lennon was also killed in the 1980s). However, the 80s marked the beginning of the end for rock - MTV. MTV, music televison, was originally around to promote rock (the first music video it aired, aptly enough, was "Video Killed The Radio Star"). However, as time went on, MTV shifted its focus to rap, and whatever rock was left was rock/rap hybrid: Limp Bizkit, Korn, POD, Linkin Park, Nine Inch Nails, etc. This later became nu metal. As nu metal gained huge popularity, genuine rock was left in the dust, and the networks realized that rap was the way to go. Now, rock is left with Coldplay and The Killers as its powerhouses, who, frankly, don't deserve the name, especially as they're becoming more and more overplayed. Rap is replacing it, apparent to residents of Philadelphia and the Delaware valley, who woke up on morning to find that Radio 1 had replaced Y100, an [alternative rock] station, with ANOTHER rap station. As if we needed more. Save rock!
