A savage word for "stupid", "dumb", "idiotic", and/or "moronic".

It has [quite] a history. It originated from the latin term "retard" which means "to slow down". It then lead to the FORMER medical term (which got phased out/replaced with "[intellectual disability]") "mental retardation" which meant an Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of 70 or lower. "Mental Retardation" was the noun that lead to the adjective "mentally retarded" which then lead to just simply "retarded".

"Retarded" became a slang/derogatory term for "stupid" and [politically correct] people disliked it. That's why "mental retardation" got phased out in federal documents and alot of medical documents. Terms like "idiot" and "moron" have a similar history as "retarded".

With such a history, [politically correct] people often dislike it when people use the word "retarded" both formally (when referring to someone with a low IQ level) and informally (when just referring to a stupid person who doesn't necessarily have a low IQ level).

About 95% of the time when people use the term "retarded" they're using it INFORMALLY (when they just mean "stupid" but are not aiming/directing it at or referring to someone with a low level IQ). Politically correct people don't like this. Yet people who use the term "retarded" informally, aren't even trying to insult those with low IQ levels. This is fine.

About 5% of the time when people say "retarded" they're talking about people with low IQ levels. They're jerks and this is unacceptable.
