One of the two major political parties in the United States. Founded in 1828 by tennessee politician and later president Andrew Jackson and his supporters, the party originally held a more conservative view. However, over time, the party became more liberal in the early 20th Century, taking on a more progressive economic policy during Franklin Roosevelt’s presidency. During the civil rights movement in the 1960s, it’s commonly acknowledged to have switched places with its historical rival, the [Republican Party], to become the more socially liberal party, as the [republicans] became the conservatives. Running on liberal policies generalized into pro [environmentalism], protection and expansion of civil rights, regulation of the market so it does not hurt the people, and regulation of firearms. Despite it being considerably more liberal than its republican counterpart, the party acts much more conservative than most of the world’s other progressive parties. In recent years, factions of the party have become even more progressive, arguing for social democratic programs to become a part of the party’s agenda, spearheaded by certain politicians, most notably Vermont senator bernie sanders. As of now, they hold power in the lower seat of congress, the House of Representatives, while the [Republican Party] holds the senate and the presidency.
