The PigBear (Ursus Scrofa) is a powerful animal that resembles a medium sized bear. [The animal] gets its name PigBear from a lack of hair and its unique nose. When aroused or threatened this animal pulls back [it’s] nose causing it to become stout, similar to that of a pig. It is this action that caused the first settlers of [Louisiana] to give [the animal] it’s name. These tough animals are solitary and need a lot of room to roam. [Individual] PigBears may travel 15-20 miles in a day in search of food. Because of these habitat requirements, PigBears have been sighted in remote boreal forests, taiga, and tundra in the northern latitudes of Europe and now North America. In the later part of the 20th Century PigBears have been hunted to almost extinction. While rare, recent sightings have tended to be in heavily forested or high alpine desert environments, however proximity to a constant water source is required and have shown that the PigBear may be making somewhat of a comeback. In North America alone the sightings of PigBears has doubled from 2000 to 2010.
