Katatonia is a unique Swedish metal band which pioneered death-doom metal outside of the UK. Formerly a death-doom metal band, presently a completely unfathomable stew-up of different genres, best defined as Katatonia metal. For all intents and purposes, Katatonia is a duo of Anders and Jonas and a revolving door of other guys. Has a large multi-genre appeal but has never quite had the popularity of their friends and old bandmates in Opeth. Anyone who puts oneself through the enjoyable misery of listening to their music and trained in the art of deciphering death-metal vocals will find the lyrics regard purely depression, loss and heartbreak, composed in faux-poetic abstract word sandwiches. Were the members not gnarly long haired death-metaller types, we might be inclined to feel a little worried about them. The act of listening to their music is best compared to having your heart and soul ripped out and stamped on a bit, gently, caringly, and meaningfully, all at once. If this sounds like BDSM, maybe it is. Nevertheless, it has a dedicated fan-base that seem to like this and have persisted through the decades so that they can have their feelings stamped on a bit more with each new album. Not krieg enough to like in trve kvlt metal circles anymore. Hide your guilty pleasure, or claim that you haven't been able to enjoy them since "Sounds of Decay".
