Shadowhunters are humans who protect and govern the mundanes and downworlders in Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices. Shadowhunters are humans who are born with the blood of the Angel Raziel. They 'control' the shadow world and those who live in it e.g. downworlders (warlocks, fairies, vampires, werewolves)and demons. Their mandate is to keep the peace in the Shadow World and keep it hidden from the mundane world while protecting the inhabitants of both worlds. Shadowhunters despite having the blood of the Angel, are mortal and therefore vulnerable to old age and death; however, their angelic blood gives them special abilities (that mundanes do not posses)that allow them to slay demons and have somewhat special powers through runes.
