Originated from the science-fiction anime and manga Ghost In The Shell, wherein brain-computer interfaces are used by the everyman to communicate, get information and the like, much like we use smartphones today. They're also in use by military and law enforcement. They need to ensure that they cannot be detected from EM emissions, or hacked (having their senses manipulated, or bodies remote-controlled), both of which would be devastating to an operation. To avoid this, they turn off all external communications, entering autistic mode.
