abbreviation for "suspected person." The "sus law" effectively permitted the police to stop and search, and even arrest, anyone found in a public place on the grounds that they might intend to commit an offence. This police power was widely abused in England and Wales in the 1970s, as police predominantly used it to target black and ethnic minorities in Britain. The law was repealed in 1981.
